Monthly Meeting To Host Karen Conkel from GuideDogs.org

Karen Conkel Ambassador handler from GuideDogs.orgIn April our Lakewood Ranch veterans group monthly meeting will host Karen Conkel, an Ambassador handler from GuideDogs.org.

People with vision loss are young and old, students and professionals, parents and grandparents, husbands and wives, sons and daughters. Some have been blind all their lives; others lose vision unexpectedly, suddenly, and the losses quickly magnify. Loss of vision creates loss of driving, loss of jobs, loss of freedom. Their world can be a very dark place.

Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are active duty and retired, men and women, young and old, from all walks of life. The unseen scars of military trauma create losses that quickly magnify. Reclusiveness, depression, anxiety, flashbacks, and hypervigilance become daily battles. Their world, too, can be a very dark place.

Guide Dogs and Service Dogs Making a Remarkable Difference

And then they meet the extraordinary guide dogs and service dogs trained at GuideDogs.org that transform their world with stunning skills and boundless affection.

Graduates walk out the door to freedom, heads high, shoulders back, confidence soaring. Possibilities multiply and independent travel becomes the new normal. A new best friend offers a steady source of unconditional love. A dog never has a bad day, offering warm hugs, boundless positivity, and skills on command that make a remarkable difference.

This presentation by Karen will no doubt benefit all.

Meetings start at 6:30pm at the Del Webb Lakewood Ranch Oasis Amenity Center. Meetings are open to all members and potential members. Being a veteran is not a requirement – supporters of our military are welcome.
