DWLRAVMS January 8, 2019 Meeting Minutes
Attendance: 32 members present indicating a quorum. Excused absence: Secretary P. Sefton.
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Commander Martinez at 6:40pm. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice Commander, Jerry Hufford . An invocation was given by Commander Herman Martinez. He welcomed everyone to today’s meeting.
Commander Herman Martinez welcomed 6 new members to the meeting and asked each to stand up and give a brief introduction.
Herman went on to explain the reason for the different configuration for the seating at this meeting. (Chairs have been placed in circles starting with an inner circle and moving out to two outer circles). This meeting will be different and it will be explained as it happens.
Commander Herman thanked Charlie and his team for setting up the room each month, their help is greatly appreciated.
Membership: A new membership drive will be formed in 2019 starting with the addition of a Membership Chairmen and Committee Members to support improvements.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer, Steve Milbrod gave a report on current financials. He reported a starting balance on 12/12/18 of $1097 and an end balance on 01/06/19 of $1593. He explained that the bulk of the positive change was due to income from membership dues ($635). The group also had expenses of $139 for hats and shirts.
Secretary’s Report: The secretary’s report is available for review by all members in the website.
Voting of Officers: Both the Treasurer and Vice Commander positions are up for vote. The two year term will start in January of 2019 and carry into January of 2021. Commander Martinez stated that no new nominations from last month have been added. No nominations were heard from the floor for those seats. The Hufford and Milbrod nomination and vote supported both to continue in their positions (due to no opposition).
A nomination from the floor was made by member Terry Tamanaukis to fill the vacant “Director At Large” position. Member Ernie Wawrowicz was elected by unanimous vote to fill the two-year position.
Commander Martinez discussed the year going forward and stressed the importance of supporting the organization by being open-minded to change and improved participation from the membership. He especially wanted our membership to support committee work going forward. He named the Outreach Coordinator, Membership Committee and Events Committee as being key to our success in 2019.
Deviation from our regular meeting
At this point, Commander Martinez explained to the membership that he had been getting “mixed signals” from the members about his leadership style. He wanted to allow the opportunity for the membership to freely discuss without his presence and decide if they give him their “vote of confidence” to continue to lead the AVMS.
Commander Martinez briefly exited the meeting room.
Discussion followed with all positive comments on the commander’s leadership and mostly a questioning of why he felt this was needed.
One point shared by several members was the lack of use of the Robert’s Rules to run the meeting. It was also mentioned that that should be more people volunteering to help in committees.
Commander Martinez was called back in and told that he had everyone’s full vote of confidence. Herman thanked all.
We agreed to go back to our normal meeting structure next month.
Meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm.
Jerry E. Hufford, Vice Commander (for Secretary Pat Sefton)
