Jerry E. Hufford: In Memoriam

Jerry HuffordOn Feb. 8, 2022, the Del Webb community and AVMS lost a friend and leader with the sudden passing of Jerry E. Hufford.

Jerry served as Commander of AVMS since 2020 and was the guiding force behind the programs and projects that AVMS sponsored. All of which carried the theme that was Jerry – helping others.

Peggy Hufford said her husband will be remembered in Del Webb as the guy who would drop everything to run over and help people. Although his efforts were always front and center to the local residents who benefited from his kindness, Jerry preferred to be the guy behind the scenes.

A very moving tribute was paid to Jerry at the Sarasota National Cemetery on March 2, 2022. The flag was presented by two Air Force Airmen to his wife Peggy, Military Taps was played, a message was delivered by AVMS Chaplain Ken Anderson, and a moving tribute was offered by Jerry’s dear friend and former AVMS Commander, Herman Martinez. The ceremony concluded with the release of four homing doves.

A Celebration of Life followed the ceremony at the Del Webb Oasis. Jerry’s family and friends gathered and shared heartfelt memories of Jerry. The Del Webb Let’s Sing Choir sang the Beatles, “All You Need Is Love”. The Beatles were one of Jerry’s favorites and that song captures the spirit of Jerry Hufford.

When thinking about Jerry’s story, it has three amazing character traits, among many others:

  • Servant Leadership
  • Friendship
  • Love

While we know Jerry would have been self-conscious about being talked about, he lived those traits.

As we all grieve the loss of our AVMS leader, we do so with the promise of carrying forward the work and example that Jerry provided.
